Values affect our lives every moment. They are a guiding force in all we do and pursue. When our values are in congruence with our actions, we are in harmony. But what are values? And how did we develop them?

When educators, parents or facilitators enter into a Living Values Education workshop they are invited to reflect on their own values, and the experiences, people, qualities and values that are most meaningful in their lives. For example, they are asked to think of a positive person who made a difference in their life and what values or qualities that person held. Then they are invited to reflection on the question: If everyone in the world lived that value or quality, would the world be different?

If you were asked to pick two values that would change the world if everyone lived them, what values would you choose? Reflect for a moment: Peace and respect? Honesty and compassion? Love and courage? Each person may have a different answer, but each one of us is right. If everyone in the world lived just two values, all the time, the world would change completely.

Our world is in crisis, environmentally, socially and economically. While global turmoil manifests at the physical level, it is really a crisis of values, for the origin is within the hearts and minds of men and women. What are the anti-values that create violence and war? What are the values, attitudes and communication skills that create peace, equality, dignity, belonging and wellbeing for all? What do we want in our world?

Values are the essence of who we are as human beings. They powerfully impact what we create in our lives and the world. Living the values of peace, love, respect, honesty, kindness and compassion makes us happy - and creates a world of peace and respect for our children. What young people learn is later woven into the fabric of society. When education has positive values at its heart, and the resulting expression of them as its aim, we will create a better world for all. Values such as peace, love, respect, honesty, cooperation and freedom are the sustaining force of human society and progress.

We invite you to join the Living Values Education family to help make a positive difference for children, educators, families, communities, and the world.

Why would I want to develop my values?

If I had the desire to make a difference in the world, or, if I had the desire to make my own life more peaceful, where would I start?

No matter what role we are currently playing, whether it be child in a family, parent, person in business, employee, school teacher, government official, retiree, whatever age, gender, nationality, spiritual belief, we all have one thing in common; a human requirement to meet our basic needs - to be Safe, Respected, Understood, Loved, Valued.

We deserve all those qualities in our life. Are they fully present now?

  • Is my life perfect?
  • Am I happy?
  • Do I have what I want?
  • Are my all my relationships in harmony?

If your answer to these simple questions is "Yes" then you are a very special and unusual being, because for most of us we believe we are lacking in many ways.

Could it be better? It comes down to happiness. If I am happy usually my world reflects back my own state of being by the circumstances I exist within and which are presented to me.

If there are areas of our lives that could improve, is there something I can do make that happen? Of course, the answer is "Yes". At some point in my life, I must recognise that I am not a victim of my circumstance, that I am responsible for my circumstance and only I can be the one to change that.

It starts with asking myself, "What do I value?" and "What are my values"? For it is my values that guide my life.

Values lie deep in our psyche, they reflect our past experiences and as such create the foundation for our lifetime of behaviour and our response to the world and people around us.

The only way to engage and enhance our values is introspection and reflection. We cannot be taught values, yet they can be introduced, brought to our greater consciousness through activities encouraging self realisation which is why Living Values unique methodology of activities structured to meet different age groups and circumstances works so well.

Whose Values? It has been determined that there are fundamental values widely shared by all Humanity. Certainly not limited but for the purpose of our discovery these primary values form the core to lead us ever deeper into to determining our behaviour, relationship and our interaction at all levels of life.

Peace • Love • Respect • Responsibility • Tolerance • Honesty • Humility
Happiness • Cooperation • Simplicity • Freedom • Unity

Our relationship to these values and the degree that we live through them determine our life.

Awareness of our values brings them to the surface. Through casting greater light on each value, we explore and encourage the positive dynamic of the value to expand within us. We begin to live within a Values Based Atmosphere and this changes - everything.

The benefit then is deep and personal, whether we are child or grown adult, at any age you can determine your future if your values are sound and active in your life. Living Values Education is all about developing Awareness for our values and providing the understanding of how to live in a better world of our own creation.

We welcome you to Living Values through the varied aspects and resources we offer.
