Living Values Education - Global Status

India - Current Status  - 18th October, 2000

Living Values has been underway in this large and diverse country in one form or another for a number of years now and the following gives an overview of some recent activities.

Programmes held include:

  • Train the Trainers;
  • Teachers' Training;
  • Programmes for Students;
  • Programmes for Young Adults; and
  • Programmes for Parents/Guardians.

Following the expression of much support for Living Values, attention has been concentrated this year on the translation of materials from English into Hindi. All the five main books have been translated and are being edited; some of them are ready for publication. Once these books are published, they will be powerful tools to disseminate Living Values Activities in India rapidly.

Living Values Education was included in the Memorandum of Understanding between Mysore University and Living Values' sponsor the Brahma Kumaris, both for students and faculty members of the University.

One of the most effective ways of promoting Living Values has been in Conferences. One such was the educational Conference held in Rajasthan organized by the Brahma Kumaris in October, 1999 and Living Values was also featured in their October 2000 Conference on New Horizons in Education.

The following gives a snapshot of different activities recently held around the country.

Students benefited greatly and their response was very good. Each teacher taught two values using various methods in the LVE books. Many students were keen on learning values through plays, songs, painting and games. They were used to talking about the values contained in stories from Hindu mythology and of historical personalities like Buddha and Mahatma Gandhi and so were keen to learn values through practical models, craft and visualisation.
