Living Values Education - Global Status

Current Status  -  June 2001

In Costa Rica, as well as in particular schools, we have been working on the Living Values Programme with the Ministry of Education. On the occasion of the visit of Gayatri Naraine (one of the Living Values international coordinators) we met with the Minister of Education and made a presentation on LVE. Not long afterwards, on the occasion of the visit of Pilar (a Spanish speaking Living Values trainer) the Programme was presented to all his advisors and a group of teachers and school directors. This inspired him to develop his own values project in the country.

A local teacher's union, the ANDE, invited us to give talks and trainings to a number of teachers in the country and produced material on Living Values for teachers throughout the country.

A group of 30 teachers and directors of different schools organized training on the use of the Living Values materials in their own schools and classrooms.

A professor of the School of Education of the University of Costa Rica, organized training for student-teachers on values and attitudes for a better education in the capital city of San Jose, as well as in the town of Paraiso in the Province of Cartago.

In the year 2000, we received an invitation from the Ministry of Education's Supervisor of the schools located in the central area of San Jose to give motivational talks to teachers and directors in order to invite them for a future training to be Organized in due course.

In May 2001, a Supervisor from the Ministry of Education for the District of Moravia requested us to give Living Values training for 110 primary and secondary school teachers of the area under her responsibility. Both groups expressed their interest in creating a support group on Living Values that would meet once every month.

Since 1997 we have been working in close collaboration with an organization called the National Commission of Values which has committees in all the different public institutions. Considering us to be one of their experts on the theme of values and education as well as values and self-development, they have asked us on many different occasions to deliver talks, conduct workshops and participate in their activities. They have also given us full support in the organization of TV programmes and such-like events.

In the Betania school we conducted full training for over 30 teachers from 10 different schools; this training was organized by the director of the Betania school and a few other teachers.

In the year 2000 we had worked with the National Commission of UNESCO in the organization of a event called "Festival Of Youth" on the theme of peace for over 100 children and youth and later on that year they asked us to give LVE training to 80 teachers who work in UNESCO Associated Schools.

The very first site in Costa Rica that worked with Living Values was the Modern Educative Institute; they started in 1998 and the whole school worked with Living Values throughout the year.
